Universities around the nation kicked off play last weekend and a few recent Shadow graduates are making an impression as freshman. Here's a quick look at some of the early highlights. Look for more updates throughout the fall.
Freshman Larkin Russell, pictured above left playing for the Shadow Women's First Team, scored the opening goal of the 2016 campaign for Portland in a 2-1 victory over the University of Washington Friday. Russell's goal came in the 19th minute when the deflection of a Portland cross fell to her feet at the top of the 18. The midfielder took a touch before burying a well-placed, low shot inside the right post to hand the Pilots a 1-0 lead.
Alex Chambers, also a freshman, tallied an assist off the bench for the final goal in a 3-1 win over Grand Canyon in the University of Idaho's second match of the weekend to give them a 1-1 record after the opening weekend.
Also of note:
At EWU, juniors Chloe Williams and Savannah Hoekstra (pictured above center) are off to hot starts. Williams scored the lone goal in their season opener in a win against Grand Canyon Friday in overtime. On Monday, Hoekstra became just the third player in program history to net a hat-trick, posting all three goals in a 3-2 win over Utah State. Williams assisted on the first. Hoekstra also tallied twice in a 4-1 win over University of British Columbia while Williams had a goal and assist in the exhibition victory that kicked off the preseason the previous weekend.
