Navy is theme for Saturday as long-time foe Yakima comes to town
SPOKANE SHADOW NEWS RELEASE -- Friday, May 9, 2014
The Spokane Shadow announced the official 18-player game day roster Friday in advance of the team’s Evergreen Premier League contest Saturday evening at the newly-renovated Spokane Falls CC Stadium against Yakima United. Game time is set for 7:00 pm. Fans are encouraged to wear navy in contrast to Yakima's traditional red, and arrive early for a family-friendly tailgate.
A number of players join the mix for the second game of the season, including the contingent of underclassmen from Whitworth University that have since completed their spring programs. Area standouts Cody Lang and Derrick Gonzales return home from Seattle Pacific and St Martin's and are joined by Tri-Cities product Derek Zimmerman.
Also joining the team’s general player pool late this week from the University of Great Falls are goalkeeper Jose Pena (pictured, right) and striker Luis Miguel Torres (pictured), who impressed the coaches previously at the club tryouts earlier this spring. Joining them from the Argos is defender Juan Valderrama, who was an all-conference selection as a freshman.

About the Opposition: Yakima United
Affectionately referred to as the Hoppers due to the hops on their crest, the team is owned by the most of the same group that were the original and long-time owners of the Yakima Reds, the heated foe of the Shadow in the USL PDL. Yakima continues to don all red uniforms and will be doing so Saturday.
The Hoppers come to Spokane with a 1-1 record, downing Seattle 4-2 in their opener at home and dropping last week's home contest versus South Sound, 2-1. They fell behind against the Stars before running off four consecutive from Luiz Martinez, Hector Valdovinos, Junior Garcia and Dennis Stevensen for the victory. The fell behind at home again last week with an equalizer from Garcia putting them level before the break in the defeat. All four goal scorers are on the club’s roster for the game in Spokane.
