Club looks to avenge season-opening loss against league-leading Hammers
SPOKANE SHADOW NEWS RELEASE -- Friday, June 13, 2014
The Spokane Shadow take their five-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) to Bellingham Sunday to face a Hammers side that currently sits tied for first in the Evergreen Premier League. The game is at 3:00 pm at Civic Stadium.
The Shadow, undefeated on the road (3-0-1), are 4-2-1 at the halfway point of their EPLWA campaign while Bellingham is 5-3-1 nine games into their season. Sitting in fourth on 13 points, Spokane is only three points back of the Hammers and South Sound (5-0-1).
“Bellingham is a tough team. They have a good mix of older guys and college players - similar to our make up,” said Shadow head coach Chad Brown. “I believe in our group! They have shown great character and are improving everyday. We have a great opportunity to get better and improve our process going into what can be a tough environment. If we play to our ability by focusing on us and the details we consistently discuss, we will give ourselves a chance to be successful.”
The Hammers won the first meeting between the two sides, rallying to top the Shadow in their season opener, 2-1. Nick Hamer gave Spokane the lead on a ball from Mike Ramos 11 minutes in, but the visitors answered three minutes later through Keith Ferris and got the winner in the 70th via Gibril Freeman.
Bellingham is 2-1-0 at home and are coming into the match off a big 8-2 victory at home against Yakima United last week in which Tyler Bjork scored six goals – all in the first half of the contest.
“They just came off an eight-goal game. We’re sticking to our game plan and going there to try to defend our road unbeaten streak,” said leading Shadow goal scorer Mike Ramos, who is third in the league in scoring with six goals.
About the Opposition: Bellingham United
Adding to the three he scored previously in the season, the six-goal performance vaulted Bjork atop the scoring table with nine goals. Daniel Anderson and Ryo Matsubara added the final two goals after Bjork exited the game. The victory ended a three-game winless streak for Bellingham, who played to a 1-1 draw at WestSound before falling 5-1 at Vancouver and 2-1 on the road against South Sound. The majority of the BUFC squad hails from Western Washington University, including Bjork.
Next Home Game – Saturday, June 21 vs South Sound
The Shadow return home to take on the current unbeaten side South Sound FC. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm at Spokane Falls CC Stadium with family-friendly tailgating beginning at 5:00 pm.
