Whitworths all-time leading scorer adds Senior Team responsibilities to current youth club role
The Spokane Shadow men’s soccer team announced that Niko Varlamos, Director of Coaching – Juniors at Spokane SC Shadow youth club, has been named as the assistant coach for the new EPLWA side set to kick off in 2014.
Varlamos, who has been coaching for the Shadow youth club for five years, will coordinate the infusion of the area’s top youth prospects with incoming collegiate players.
“Though we have not selected a head coach as of yet, we knew from day one that Niko was the perfect person within the club to help oversee the preparation of players within the youth club, identifying other top youth prospects in the greater-Spokane and North Idaho region and working with all of the players as they come in from colleges throughout the Northwest this summer,” said Spokane SC Shadow Technical Director Abbas Faridnia.
A native of Edmonds, Wash., Varlamos finished his career at Whitworth University in 2006 as the program’s all-time leading goal scorer with 37 goals. He was the team captain in 2006 after earning First Team All-Region honors in 2004 and 2005. He was also Third Team All-American and Northwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2004. Varlamos also ranks tied for third all-time in points for the Pirates with 84 with Jim Martinson, a former Shadow PDL player that is now women’s head coach for the Community Colleges of Spokane.
After his Whitworth career concluded, Varlamos played for the Tacoma Tide PDL team (now Sounders FC U23) in its inaugural 2006 season. He tallied one assist and logged 683 minutes in 12 appearances as the team went 4-8-4 in its debut.
In high school Varlamos was a First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Area selection in 2003 at Edmonds Woodway HS.
