Early Shadow penalty not enough as Stars earn a point
SPOKANE SHADOW NEWS RELEASE -- Saturday, May 9, 2015
Saturday’s home opener for the defending Evergreen Premier League champion Spokane Shadow did not quite go as planned as the visiting Seattle Stars were able to get a late equalizer to earn a 1-1 draw on the night at Spokane Falls CC Stadium.
The hosts had the better of the attack throughout much of the first half, consistently putting the Stars under pressure, but the only goal came in the 32nd minute. Graison Le (Gonzaga Univ / Coeur d’Alene HS), who caused some trouble earlier in the contest, was cutting across the outside left corner of the area when he was tripped up in the box, earning a penalty from the official. Moments later Sam Engle (Whitworth) calmly knocked the ball into the right side netting out of the reach of goalkeeper Scott Barnum.
The second half was a completely different contest with the visitors providing a lot of pressure and stifling the Shadow attack on a regular basis. The switch in ball possession led to the Stars having a number of chances in the second period, most coming via long shots, however, from outside of the penalty area.
In the 78th minute, though, the Stars finally were able to create an opportunity inside the area, finding the equalizer. A turnover at midfield allowed the Stars to cut through the left side of the defense with some space. Taking the ball into the left side of the area drew Srock toward the playo and when the ball was sent inside the six, Peiman Alessandro, who had some earlier shots go close and one ring off the crossbar, was able to bang it in from close range.
